Okay. So it’s cold outside; even here where the sun shines bright and the moonshine’s delicious.
That must mean that global warming is a liberal lie. Once again we have a case of the pot calling the snowflake black.
Rush and the inmates at Fox aren’t exactly laughing their asses off. Were that so we would be rid of them. They would disappear in their entirety. However, they are laughing at humanity’s most serious threat.
They ignore the 97% of scientists who recognize reality and quote those on various corporate payrolls. They ignore that 70% of the polar icecap melts in the Summer and more each year fails to fully return.
They ignore. That makes them ignorant.
Get a Dictionary
These ignoramuses confuse climate with weather. They are not synonymous.
Climate: The long-term manifestations of weather and other atmospheric conditions in a given area.
Weather: The short term state of the atmosphere at a specific time and place, including the temperature, humidity, cloud cover, precipitation, wind, etc.
Analogy
I’ve given a limited effort to coming up with an analogy. I succeeded . . . more or less. It isn’t short and sweet. It is clumsy. It may be a bit difficult to follow, not because it requires a great deal of brain power. It does demand a modicum of persistence. Here goes:
Out of control, you are barreling down a mountain road. To the left, a precipitous drop. To the right, a wall of rock. The road bends to the left. Your car bounces off the wall on the right.
“See,” sings the Fox chorus, charmingly, unconsciously off-key, “you didn’t fall off the edge on the right.” Another bend to the left, or perhaps you swipe the flimsy barrier on the left that provides a temporary reprieve. Are we having fun yet?
Are you a car-careening-down-a-dangerous-mountain-road denier? Just because you barely negotiated a couple of turns, are you in control? Is the path broad and level? Are you safe? Forever?
Saying that global warming doesn’t exist is akin to claiming that the mountain road is the Bonneville Salt Flat.
Saying human activity is not responsible for the unprecedented rise in atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide is willful ignorance, much as claiming that lighting the fuse on a stick of dynamite isn’t the cause of the explosion.
Who Do You Trust?
Study upon study by reputable scientists provide damning data that human activity is the cause of the greenhouse effect; that the greenhouse effect is causing global warming. On the other side, we have Rush and the clowns at Fox saying it’s cold, disproving all of that scientific research. The naysayers have no training, expertise or experience in any field, much less climatology. meteorology, chemistry or any other pertinent discipline.
One of the shows on the nitwit network is called Fox and Friends. Surprisingly, among the friends of Fox are people who make a profit from the destruction of our environment. Yes Virginia, there are people who don’t give a shit who pays the price for their greed.
My guess is that the majority of deniers are simply stupid. The majority, but not all. Some, of course, benefit financially from looking foolish. Others may not directly benefit but travel in circles which do.
Then we come down, very far down, to those who subscribe to this nonsense for political reasons. Some see intelligent people concerned about the consequences of global warming and see the opportunity to turn it into a weapon, claiming it is a “liberal plot.” Some are ignorant enough to actually believe such claptrap.
Time For An Aside
Most people think that “kum bay ya,” consensus, the big tent, is the way to political success. Wrong. Smart politicians know that creating divisions is the route to winning. An issue on which everyone agrees does not stir up passions. Support will be broad but not deep. So? That means people are more difficult to motivate. They fail to show up at the polls in suffucient numbers.
However, divide them; make it a case of US versus THEM; they will fight all of the demons of hell to put “them” in their place. With a greater percentage turning out, even a minority can muster a majority of the vote. In fact, it is more effective if they either are the minority or see themselves as such.
Proof? Over 80% of the public favored banning assault weapons. The gun manufacturers convinced the booboisie that their putative “rights” were threatened. They doled out some bribes and, voila, the majority loses.
Back On Point
It isn’t just the depopulation of polar bears. This will drastically affect our species. America’s primary exports are agricultural products. Canada will inherit the title of “The World’s Breadbasket.” We will get a monopoly on Mexican cardboard-tasting tomatoes and out-of-season watermelons. Even if we can more or less successfully adapt, being able to plant different crops entails massive disruption of our infrastructure, markets and distribution.
Demographic changes will put differing pressures on different countries. While those changes in North America might be relatively simple to game, the effects in Europe and Asia are daunting to contemplate. World food production will experience significant declines. The billion or more underfed do not need a large influx to their club.
Bangladesh is probably the poorest county in the world. It is certainly among the most densely populated. Beyond small island nations, it will suffer the greatest percentage loss of land to the disappearance of glaciers and polar ice. The tragedy of that country is unimaginable.
There will be enough time for most to flee, though many will not, finding the prospects incomprehensible. Those fleeing have limited and unpleasant options, for themselves and their reluctant prospective hosts. Their neighbors are already drowning in numbers, will lose some of their own land and practice incompatible and hostile religions.
The effects on life in the oceans is already obvious. The increase in various harmful microorganisms is in our future.
All of this because some wealthy people want more money and some grasp at temporary political advantage and some are just plain stupid. They are the minority but they are winning. They just don’t know what the prize is.
