How To Win

Mitt won the first debate. Truth lost. America lost.

People lie for various reasons. Sometimes it’s to spare someone’s feelings. Sometimes it’s for reasons far less noble.

Everyone does it occasionally. Some do it so much that others know not to put trust in anything they say. Then you have people who get away with it. Myth Romney falls into that last group.

You may be forgiven if you failed to recognize Willard on stage. It came across as watching a mirror image.

I will not, I can not address all of his lies. I will remind you of the ones that don’t require me to clutter up the place with citations, because they are so well-known by everyone. Do you remember Mitt saying he would get rid of Obamacare on day one? He signed on to Ryan’s voucher plan.

He claimed that “preexisting conditions are covered under my plan.”

No, it isn’t. It couldn’t be without a drastic increase in premiums. By spreading the costs under an additional 40 or so million people, it is possible for Obamacare to do it without greater costs. Mitt’s campaign stump speeches didn’t protect those with preexisting conditions. It provided vouchers. If the insurance companies want more, you pay the extra out of your pocket or do without. Mitt lied.

Editor’s Note: Romney’s senior adviser was just reported to have issued a correction on preexisting conditions. Is even his staff calling him a liar?

He said he would keep kids on their parents health insurance to age 26.

What? The cost factors for this are the same as for preexisting conditions. Mitt lied.

He claimed Obamacare would cause 20 million people to lose their health insurance.

Wrong. It would provide health insurance for nearly 40 million more. Mitt lied.

He said it would cause small businesses to drop their health insurance plans.

No. It subsidizes them if they purchase such policies. Mitt lied.

He said that President Obama had “cut Medicare by $716 billion to pay for Obamacare.”

No, he didn’t. He eliminated certain subsidies paid to the insurance companies. He followed the suggestions of many doctors and hospitals to eliminate tests that are unneeded. He lowered costs by largely eliminating the need for doctors to cover their asses by unnecessary tests. There were several other cuts in costs that did not represent any actual reduction of coverage. He also failed to mention that Paul Ryan’s plan proposed exactly the same savings. The difference is that Obama applied the savings to Obamacare. Ryan applied the savings to increases in military spending that the Pentagon says they don’t want. Mitt lied.

He denied proposing a $5 trillion tax cut.

But, he did. It has been a standard part of his speeches to reduce the taxes of corporations and the wealthy by 20%. Really? He says they are paid for by closing loopholes. Even if they closed every loophole it would recover only a fraction of the revenue losses. He has publicly told the crowds not to expect any savings from their tax cuts. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office and other respected groups estimate that the middle class would pay an additional $2,400 while millionaires would receive a tax cut averaging $300,000. By the way, while the median income presently is close to $50,025 per year, when asked, Mitt said he thought middle class were those earning $200,000 to $250,000. Mitt is grossly detached from the real America, as well as being a liar.

He said President Obama had “added almost as much to the federal debt as all the prior presidents combined.”

Not really. Had he come in during normal economic times, he could only take credit for a small fraction of the total debt. Most of that debt was already baked in by several Congresses. Also, some of that debt is due to decreased revenues caused by the unemployment he inherited. The increase in debt during Obama’s tenure is less both in total dollars and percentage than Reagan and Bush43. Again, Mitt lied.

He spoke of  “death panels.”

What? Did he steal that from Sister Sarah or the Minnesota Mouth? A pure, unadulterated lie.

He stated that half the green energy companies given stimulus funds had failed.

Only if three out of nearly three dozen is half. That’s a far better rate of success than Bain has. It could just be that Mitt is not an accomplished mathematician. Or, it could be that he lied.

He said he favors regulations. He says he favors much of the regulations of the Dodd-Frank law.

Where did Mitt Romney go? He has always said that the only way to get the economy moving is to cut taxes and eliminate regulations. Dodd-Frank has been standard raw meat on his campaign stops. Mitt lied.

He claimed that Obama has raised taxes on the middle class and small businesses.

Obama has made two major tax cuts for everyone. He did raise taxes slightly for tanning salons and one other minor category that I can’t recall at present. However, he has reduced small business taxes in general 18 times. Mitt lied.

Mitt claimed, “You never balance the budget by raising taxes.”

Has he ever heard of Clinton? How about Eisenhower? How about Truman? Reagan, Bush and Shrub all tried to balance the budget by cutting taxes. All were spectacular failures. Is he merely ignorant or did Mitt lie?

“My plan is not to put in place any tax cut that will add to the deficit.”

Then he should tell us how he will cut taxes by $5 trillion without adding to the deficit. Perhaps he will pay for it by firing Big Bird. Mitt lied. Should I capitalize lied? It’s beginning to appear as though it is his last name.

Mitt claims that putting his assets in the Cayman Islands does not save him any on taxes.

The banking arrangements in the Caymans and other such havens were designed specifically to avoid taxes. Mitt lied.

Well, I realized I could not remember all of them. Someone on television just said he had written down 30 of Mitt’s lies in the first debate but that there were more.  Mitt, has claimed to have provided many, many specifics of his spending cuts; you know, the ones to pay for the $5 trillion in tax cuts. So far, all of the specifics add up to $2 billion. That’s right, $2 Billion to pay for $5 Trillion.

As I mentioned at the beginning there are various reasons people lie. There are inveterate liars. These are people who are capable of lying without qualms, remorse or concern. There are also the pathological liars. These people actually believe their lies. Mitt is either one or the other of these two types. I find it odd that someone who thinks that after death he will become the god of some planet can lie so easily and so much. Perhaps he will become the god of Fantasyland. I was called to task for making that statement. I was told that was insulting to Disneyland. I really didn’t mean it that way. Would the people producing Superman be upset if I used Bizarro World instead?

If one had never heard Mitt before they might be forgiven for thinking his mission in life was to help “you people” in the middle class. There would be some questions if they ever heard how he spoke to his “friends” of the 47%.

I won’t get into the lies about how he is some sort of genius at business. Except to say, he began Bain at the same time and in the same business as  Henry Kravis and George R. Roberts of KKR and others of that ilk. They all became billionaires, while poor Mitt could only manage about $250 million.

What a sorry excuse for a leader. America should be ashamed for letting such seriously vie for the position of president.
