Danger, Will Robinson, danger. Everyone needs to avoid Burger King’s new meatless burger like the plague. I’ll be the first, or maybe third, to admit that beef is not without problems, but meatless is even worse for your health.
Burger King is certain to market this monstrosity as a healthy alternative. Such a claim is akin to the refrain from the pharmaceutical companies proclaiming every new drug a miracle. Surely, you say, a fast food corporation’s claims can’t be as outrageous as those from Big PhRMA (al-PhRMA). Yes. Major corporations share a great deal of their DNA.
So, what’s the problem? Soy. How can that be? It’s in almost everything. That’s a part of the problem.
Soy contains phytoestrogens. And, it causes your body to manufacture more estrogen. We generally think of estrogen as the female hormone. Everyone needs some but men need far less than women. But, there are, or should be, limits even for women.
Soy blocks nutrients in other foods that you consume. Take a couple of months sometime and go down the aisles at your local supermarket. Read every label. How many don’t include soy or high fructose corn syrup or both? Right,
Why are those two “foods” so ubiquitous? There are a couple of reasons. The food industry is the world’s largest industry. They are constantly trying to sell you more product and save in costs.
They know that there are a lot of health-conscious shoppers clogging up the aisles. They know that few of these health-conscious shoppers actually understand nutrition. They rely on the news stories and advertising that is all part of the marketing of these corporations.
Every new product or new ingredient, just as every new drug, is a miracle. How do they make a food “healthier”? They remove the fat. Fat, particularly saturated fat, is where almost all of the nutrients and taste reside. Take out the saturated fat and the food is “healthy.” Not really. But they have a problem. No one wants to eat food that tastes like cardboard.
So, they throw in soy and high fructose corn syrup. Why those two? Two reasons. First, those two receive the giant’s share of government subsidies. They are cheap.
Secondly, they are both very easy to manipulate in the laboratory. The scientists can make them look, taste and feel like just about anything their bosses want. Voila! Impossible burger.
There are a couple of other problems with soy. All of that estrogen in everything we eat is largely responsible for obesity. For men, think man boobs. As for the overload of estrogen for those of the female persuasion, the problems can be even worse. One serious problem is that teenage, and even preteen girls are reaching puberty much sooner.
Cheap to manufacture and easy to foist off on the public as healthy, what more could a greedy corporation ask for? Well, it appears that this miracle burger is only going to cost a dollar more than a real Whopper. Hallelujah.
Having spent a great deal of time in Korea and Japan, I am fond of soy sauce. We don’t consume soy sauce as we do a 7-11 Big Gulp. We normally use small amounts for flavoring a food. Here is a place not to skimp. There are two ways to make soy sauce.
The old-fashioned way is through the process of fermentation. If the bottle says naturally brewed or traditionally brewed. you’re fine. That process takes about 5 months and eliminates most of the toxins and harm. The other method is derived from the laboratory and takes only 2 days. It doesn’t eliminate any of the problems of soy. Avoid the house brands an other el-cheapo brands. Splurge.
