If you’ve hung round this blog long enough, you know that I’ve been involved with computers, off and on, since the 1950s. I have repented for ever having been a techie and am now just a user. This article is off-subject for for this blog but I thought I might be able to clear up a couple of matters on the upcoming appearance of Windows 11. No, it’s not technical. And, it’s short.

UPDATE

You have permission to read the rest of this article. It will still apply to some people. Microsoft just announced  a new release date. It was to be around the end of this year for it to be installed on new computers and shortly after the first of the year for updates. It is now October 5, 2021. Also, they have loosened up the technical requirements. Many with computers more than 4 years old should not experience any problems with updating, Apparently, somebody complained.

While Microsoft has admitted it is coming, they haven’t released a date. Enough information escaped to delight some people as it confused and upset others.

First, it will be a free upgrade for Windows 10 users . . . if your computer is new enough. It appears that the breaking point is about 4 years for most computers. For computers older than 4 years, you will likely have to plunk down the money for a new one. Windows 10 will be supported until 2025, so there’s no rush.

Some seem to think that the new criterion for 11 is unnecessary. I’m not sufficiently current to argue the point.

You can watch some of those 15- to 30-minute videos on YouTube and still not know whether or not your computer can handle 11. Or, you can read the next paragraph and find out for certain.

Run your cursor over the Start button in the lower left-hand corner of your screen. Next to it there is a search box. Type in device manager. Then scroll down to Security devices and double-click. If you see Trusted Platform Module 2.0, AKA TPM 2.0, your computer can handle Windows 11.

There appear to be several ways to get an older computer to run Windows 11 but they require some technical savvy and I promised to keep it simple.

This new version appears to be an improved, more user-friendly, more modern version, with some added features. Likely the most used will be the ability to run Android apps.

If you’ve been able to get along with 10 for more than 4 years, it will still do the job for you. If your significant other needs a reason for you to fork over the money for a new computer, this may help. You could also add that you need to do your part to help boost the economy. The 4th has passed but they can still be patriotic.

Do not worry. Whether your present computer can handle 11 or not, you’ll still be able to visit my blog.

If you found this educational, edifying, interesting or otherwise worth your time, this geezer would appreciate a little supplement to those Social Security checks, They forgot to factor in the cost of publishing a blog. I would like to continue being able to afford my daily cup of coffee and pound of caviar.
