The reluctance of NATO to widen putin’s war is quite understandable. That policy cannot be engraved in stone. That should be obvious to everyone, even the little putz whose fevered fantasy is the sole reason for this atrocity.
First, let’s clear the board of the threat of an escalation to nuclear war. World leaders and pundits have concluded that he used to be a rational player on the global scene. Most seem now to be concerned that it may no longer be true. I question the initial assertion.
Someone whose goals in life are the reconstitution of the grandeur of the weak, dysfunctional, nightmarish Imperial Russia or the glory of a rotten, economically, politically and socially bankrupt Soviet Union is not attuned to reality. A little guy who dreams of following Peter and Catherine by having history bestow upon him the title of “the Great” has a tenuous hold on reality, if that. His obvious talents for cunning and killing fails to balance his incompetence in governance and ridiculously unwarranted hubris. Heading a kleptocracy has not been a common route to endear historians.
To plagiarize myself, little vlad has feared a coup for his entire twenty-two year reign. Since those usually originate in a military, he has kept that entity at arm’s length. They are not his biggest fans. Were he to order a nuclear attack, there should be no doubt of the military’s refusal to obey. They seem not to share his grand self-assessment.
Will this dreamer accept the real world before a full involvement by NATO? That’s problematical. I doubt that, given the military’s debacle in Ukraine, they would have much appetite for taking on the UK, or France, or Germany, or even the U.S., much less the entirety of the alliance.
But would NATO ever be willing to engage? The members must admit that permitting Russia to win in Ukraine is not an option. Georgia, Chechnya, the Transnistria area of Moldova, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk, all have been invaded the by twerp. Now it’s Ukraine proper, accompanied by threats to Sweden, Finland and the Baltic States.
Another of my articles explains the folly of negotiating with this stranger to honesty.
To date, Russia’s problems with Ukraine have served to protect Taiwan from a similar miscalculation. A success for Russia might cause Beijing to recalculate.
NATO has no choice but to ensure that Russia loses. If that requires a direct confrontation, NATO must answer the call.
The reaction of Moscow to the sinking of their flagship has been inane. They are so angered that they are increasing shelling of Kyiv and threatening more. All of this for what they claim was an accidental explosion of the ship’s ammunitions.
They need to experience further discombobulation. Little vlad’s favorite getaway is his villa on the Black Sea. That is within the range of some of the weapons being supplied.
Commentators on Russian television blustered that Ukraine had committed the unpardonable sin of attacking Russian land. Actually, I don’t think sinking a major warship qualifies as the bombing of Mother Russia. Ukraine should now go on the offensive by attacking the Russian military bases that serve the attacks on Ukraine.
I don’t wish to be misunderstood on the following. After going on the attack, perhaps including the measures I suggested, Ukraine might issue a warning that unless Russia ceases targeting civilians, there will be a response in kind. First, I’m not a fan of war. I certainly do not wish to see more civilians targeted. I don’t know if such a warning would have a salutary effect but it may be worth announcing. For the others who are squeamish, classify it as psychological warfare.
Again, Russia is no match for NATO. Russia might get to see an actual military operation that lasts no more than their imaginary 72 hour special military operation. It’s just that they could witness it from the other end.
If you found this educational, edifying, interesting or otherwise worth your time, this geezer would appreciate a little supplement to those Social Security checks, They forgot to factor in the cost of publishing a blog. I would like to continue being able to afford my daily cup of coffee and pound of caviar.
