Having been a foreign correspondent, the title of the video I have embedded quite naturally caught my attention. I expected to see something familiar. I should have known better. The video is a compilation by The New Yorker of impressions of this country by foreign correspondents assigned to the U.S. It always helps to see ourselves as others see us.
Most Americans see the country as exceptional. It is — but not exactly in a way that is flattering. Late in the video, one correspondent, unintentionally, I would think, speaks with an uncomfortable honesty. It’s difficult to disagree with his sentiment.
My day was 50 and more years ago. Things have changed; not for the better. Were I a foreign correspondent today, I would not flaunt my nationality. Once there was some pride in carrying a U.S. passport.
We have a lot of work to do. Pitch in. Vote.
If you found this educational, edifying, interesting or otherwise worth your time, this geezer would appreciate a little supplement to those Social Security checks, They forgot to factor in the cost of publishing a blog.
