WingnutIt is truly amazing that grownups can pay tribute to an ideology whose history is so despicable and whose record is one of always being wrong. Of whom do I speak? The right, both political and economic.

Math à la Newt

April 6, 2014

in Politics

Newt BlingI first met Newt in 1973, when he was making his initial unsuccessful bid for Congress. Fortunately, I have not seen him since 1980. I was a local office holder and he wanted my help. He failed to obtain it. My standards were never that low and he was always transparent.

Despite his claims, Newt’s intellect should be an embarrassment to him. My first degree was in history. It is weird listening to this former college instructor in history try to speak on the subject. His lack of comprehension, beyond a handful of names and dates, is astounding. Then, again, he seems also proud of his marital accomplishments.

Economics? A total absence of credentials and comprehension in no impediment to this jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none. Facts? He tenaciously holds to that same standard.

Since the media decided to forgo journalism in favor of entertainment, buffoons have become the networks’ stock in trade guests. That provides Newt with a level of exposure that is toxic to the public.

The Differences?

April 5, 2014

in Politics

Taliban = Scotts

Afghanistan Conservatives’ Goals = American Republicans’ Goals

There are two areas where I find the lines blurred. One is in the national/international arena. The other is closer to home. You likely have heard about the first ones. I hope you have been spared the later.

The Church, Inc.

Wannabe GodYou remember Mitt Romney. He’s the one that believes that when he dies he will become the god of his own planet. (See the Book of Mormon Jokes.) More importantly, he believes, as he said, “Corporations are people, my friend.” Two down . . . and as little Ricky Perry, I can’t remember the third.

Before we get past this supreme egoist, remember how he made the fortune of which he is so proud; the one that makes him superior to us. Forget his paltry inheritance. Most of the work of Bain, his personal creation, consisted of acquiring healthy corporations, sucking from them everything of value and eliminating them. Anyone taking seriously the claim that corporations are people, perforce, must take seriously Stephen Colbert’s characterization of Mitt as a serial killer.

The Supreme Court of Wall Street presently has a case under advisement that the oligarchs fear will rid us of that particular inanity.

If the majority on the court ruled for Citizens United and favor corporations 93% of the time, why wouldn’t they rule for the Hobby Lobby corporation this time? Well, this time there’s a difference. Scores of corporations filed amicus briefs supporting Citizens United. Nary a one has done so on behalf of Hobby Lobby.

A Bigger Bang

March 16, 2014

in Whatever

The Big BangIn grammar school one of my treasures was a telescope. If the Friday night sky was clear the university’s telescope was open to the public. It was located on the other side of the ridge, which blocked some of the town’s light. I would peddle the 6 miles to wonder what it was all about. A major thrill was when I was allowed to stay up late to witness an eclipse of the Moon. When I realized that I didn’t want to continue to pursue a major in math, I flirted with astronomy as the alternate. I have never been able to escape the attraction of the universe.

Brain Freeze

Oh, Lonesome MeOkay. So it’s cold outside; even here where the sun shines bright and the moonshine’s delicious.

That must mean that global warming is a liberal lie. Once again we have a case of the pot calling the snowflake black.

Rush and the inmates at Fox aren’t exactly laughing their asses off. Were that so we would be rid of them. They would disappear in their entirety. However, they are laughing at humanity’s most serious threat.

Fake Ducks

in Politics,Religion

The Boobouise Love ItIf it quacks like Duck Dynasty, it must be hypocrisy. “Reality shows” are as realistic as Michael Jackson’s face was or Fox “News” is.

That doesn’t diminish the devotion of their audiences of Americans that refuse to think. In fact, that’s the appeal.

Carl SaganIt’s a pity that some are too young to have been enthralled by the messages and, indeed, the voice of Carl Sagan.

You didn’t need to be inspired to become an astrophysicist or an astronaut.

You could be inspired with a sense of wonder at the Earth on which we stand Enjoy this very short consideration of our world by Carl Sagan.

Crude Ted

Ted CruzWhat have we done to merit this abomination?

That raucous noise coming out of the District of late is from what appears to be the latest Joe McCarthy wannabe. Calling those with whom you disagree communist and such will earn you that distinctive reputation.

Teddy Cruz is the new senator from Texas. That explains a lot. He comes with the swagger common among those referred to as “all hat and no cattle.”

White Flag

It’s over. Most people didn’t realize there was a war. Is it really a war when only one side fights? They won while we sat around congratulating ourselves on being a part of the “Greatest Country in the World.”

Just how is it the “Greatest?”

One of every four prisoners in the world are in our prisons. Please, temper your pride. Thirty-seventh in the world in health. Outside of the top-ten in satisfaction with ones life. Richest population? Not even close. Need I go on?

We used to be number one, What happened?
