Strap ’em Down

Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema apparently enjoy bathing in the limelight while pontificating on subjects of their ignorance. Supposing they are at least semiliterate, we all might profit were they to actually study about the Founders, the Constitution, the filibuster, bipartisanship and pay attention to Mitch McConnell’s threats and actions.

They could read James Madison’s records of the debates on the Constitution. They might consider borrowing the copy of the Federalist Papers from someone who prefers to learn the history, rather than trying to create scenarios that comport with their baseless predilections.

I’ll simplify it for those disinclined to actually try to learn how the Founders felt about such an abortion as the filibuster. The subject of supermajorities was addressed and debated by the Founders. They soundly rejected them except for special situations: overriding vetoes, ratifying treaties, admitting new states, adopting an amendment to the Constitution. expelling a senator or impeaching an official.

As you can see, they considered the subject of supermajorities quite extensively. But, they explicitly rejected its common employment as is the intent and use of the filibuster.

These two are not limited to an aversion to facts. Logic is definitely an arrow missing from their quivers. Far from the filibuster promoting bipartisanship, it gives the majority a way to shut down any efforts for the majority to engage. It is ironic that such a monstrosity exists, particularly in the Senate. The filibuster obstructs any dialogue in what they pompously call, “The World’s Greatest Deliberative Body.” I

It’s difficult to argue that these two are representing their constituents when the other senators from both of their states disagree.

But the important questions for them are, whether the filibuster and/or bipartisanship is more important than voting rights, infrastructure, et al.

Neither of these people have any justification for holding their offices, beyond ego, love of power and the money they have access to, both presently and potentially once they are out of office. Both seem very vulnerable in their next election cycle but cushy lobbying jobs on K Street await. Then their pretenses of serving the people will be unnecessary.

If you found this educational, edifying, interesting or otherwise worth your time, this geezer would appreciate a little supplement to those Social Security checks, They forgot to factor in the cost of publishing a blog. I would like to continue being able to afford my daily cup of coffee and pound of caviar.
