The Constitution Is Not A Suicide Pact

What will Trump do? The answer is that he will try anything and everything he can think of to remain in the Oval Office. While he loves being president, even though he cares not for the actual job, he has more than one incentive.

Leaving the presidency as a consequence of losing the election, will be devastating to history’s largest ego. Early on, I would not have been surprised had he decided not to run. But, that ego convinced him that he couldn’t lose. However, even he has come to the realization of the criminal, civil and financial jeopardy he faces as a civilian.

His delicate psyche is therefore under great stress. That explains much of his erratic behavior. Matters will only get worse. Out of office, his creditors have no incentive to be considerate. With the debt load that he carries, the fact that Mar-a-Lago, all of his golf courses and most, if not all, of his other properties in the red he will have to liquidate most of his assets.

His position will not protect him from the courts of the states. I say states in the plural because some think that only the State of New York has cause to hold him to account. Some of the women that accuse him of assault live elsewhere. People and corporations in other states and possibly in other countries may also enter the legal picture. Members of his family are also criminally and civilly exposed.

A thought just crossed my mind. With all of the time Donnie has spent on his golden ‘throne,’ if he had not spent so much of that time tweeting, he may have been potty trained by now.

Vladimir may offer protection with exile in Russia. After all, he is such a nice guy.

Undoubtedly, he has considered, even spoken of, delaying the election. The Constitution allows for the Congress to change the date but only the Congress. In the instance of some unimaginable event, they might do so. However, there was no delay for WWI or WWII or even the Civil War.

Even were the date of the election changed, even the Congress could not alter the inauguration. That event will take place at Noon on the 20th of January, come hell or high water. That requires that the election be held and the results certified before that time.

He may expect that he can order the Secret Service or the military or the U.S. Marshalls to support him. Once there is an inauguration of someone else, their oaths require them to honor the directions of his successor. Though the Secret Service is duty bound to protect the lives of former presidents, that does not preclude then carrying him out of the people’s house kicking and screaming, even those, if any exist, who do not detest this bozo who was willing to put a couple of them in mortal jeopardy with his little jaunt outside of Walter Reed Hospital in a hermetically sealed SUV. His next visit to Walter Reed should be for a prolonged stay in Ward 54.

I have watched the talking heads and read the pundits wringing their hands about possible scenarios if he just refuses  to leave. If the Constitution is followed by those who have taken an oath to it, Trump will no longer endanger the nation after the 20th of January. The Constitution is not a suicide pact.

For any Republicans still not convinced that Biden, though not the best this country has to offer, is an exponential improvement over Trump, I give you Trump’s own words: “What do you have to lose?”

Further

Beyond the danger represented by Trump himself is the specter of attacks on our election process by Russia. Rudy has already been revealed to have been helping them with a repeat performance of 2016. No rational observer or tealeaf reader considers a Trump win possible without the interference of the Russians. If the election results show Trump the winner, what are you willing to do? Surely we can’t be expected to sit on our hands and accept the result of an attack by a foreign country.

We want, expect and deserve an honest election. Were Trump’s numbers after the 4th of November to show him ahead, that would not, should not be acceptable. To accept any results crafted by a foreign belligerent nation, rather than the citizens of this country would, in effect, be aiding the enemy. It would be no different than collaboration. Another word for that would be treason. Harsh words? Yes. But honest and the result of patriotism.

Having worked with two intelligence agencies, although my areas were East Asia and the Middle East, I am not totally unaware or Pollyannaish about the machinations of the Russians. From what little I have been able to glean about the efforts of our current intelligence operations, I really don’t expect Putin’s efforts to be sufficiently effective to change the outcome. But, I can’t ignore what is happening to benefit Trump and I am unwilling to accept a corrupt result.

If you found this educational, edifying, interesting or otherwise worth your time, this geezer would appreciate a little supplement to those Social Security checks, They forgot to factor in the cost of publishing a blog.
