The Terump Error

Trump doesn’t care about Roe v. Wade. Trump doesn’t care the actual job of president. Trump doesn’t care about America. Trump just cares about the perks and prestige of the office — at least the prestige it used to have.

Trump’s pick for the Supreme Court thinks the Constitution is irrelevant. She thinks the bible should be the basis of her decisions. How do I know? Because I can read what she has publicly stated, To quote her, “A legal career is but a means to an end . . . and that end is building the Kingdom of God.” As she holds the bible as the standard for everything, she should have gone into the ministry. Well, maybe not, since she is a Catholic.

She prides herself on being an “originalist.” Really? Why? The signers were most definitely not originalists. They were merely the originals. They wrote into the Constitution two ways of altering the document. They were intelligent enough to recognize it for what it was — a collection of compromises. None were completely satisfied with it and wanted to ensure it could be changed in the future.

Some originals wanted emancipation. They got slavery. Women’s rights didn’t get included. Does this “brilliant” scholar wish to reinstitute  slavery or take away her own right to vote? Is she being consistent in accepting a seat on the Court while being a woman? Perhaps she is unaware that there have been some changes in society in the past couple of centuries. I would posit that accepting a seat on any court, when the originals would not allow women even to be attorneys, is emblematic of the hypocrisy that permeates her misunderstanding of several aspects of this nation.

Judge Amy Coney Barrett has stated that judges should recuse themselves when matters of their religion are considered. But, that should be a big BUT, she feels an obligation to overturn Roe v. Wade. She is apparently a judicial acrobat. She can be wishy-washy while being firmly committed. I would also question her familiarity with the bible. Is she unaware of who is responsible for aborting more pregnancies far far than the runner-up? Has she never heard of the great flood that killed off all but 4 women, pregnant or not?

Maybe it makes sense. Since, as a female, she is considered worthy of being treated as a 2nd class citizen and denied equality, she feels comfortable treating women, LGBTQ, immigrants, people of color, and anyone else not as Christian as herself as not entitled to equal treatment under the law.

Given the manner in which this appointment is being rammed through, despite the fact that the majority thinks it should await a new president, if her sense of honor outweighed her ambition, she would reject it. She would also should reject it while Ruth Bader Ginsburg has yet to be interred.

We claim this nation to be a democracy. How? The people’s branch of government, the House of Representatives, has a majority of members from the Democratic party. On the other hand, the Senate. though majority Republican, was elected by only 41% of the electorate. The president himself is sitting in the Oval Office against the wishes of the majority. Though the pubic wishes otherwise, the Court is about to become a 6-3 majority opposed to their wishes.

None of that strikes me as emblematic of a democracy. Rather, it reeks of a distortion based on hypocrisy, gerrymandering, voter suppression and more. She clerked for Anton Scalia, usually described as the most conservative of the Court when he sat. Now, his protégé is described as to the right of even him. Is there any same person who believes that is appropriate, that it represents a democracy? Does Trump care? Does she care? Do Republicans care? One guess.

She is said to be against the Affordable Care Act. Some claim that the poor deserve their plight. At least that is the position of some who flaunt their putative Christianity. Others of that ilk claim that Christian charity will be sufficient to serve those in need. I think that is belied by their history so far. Perhaps we need to clone Jim Bakker, Earnest Ainsley, Oral Roberts, Benny Hinn and others of that ilk. Maybe we could resurrect Aimee Semple McPherson and a few others.

Christianity tells us to love even our enemies. I failed to realize that denying people in need of medical attention was how love is supposed to be expressed.

We really never expected Trump, Moscow Mitch, Lindsey and most other such phonies to exhibit a sense of decency, honor or pride in the aspirations of the country. So, there is no reason for us to be disappointed at this particular turn of events. Just add it to the plethora of disappointments in being a citizen of this . . . great democracy.

When I was young, I believed what I was told about how wonderful it was to be living in this great democracy, As I grew older, I believed that we could actually achieve that. Now, in my eighties, I have no expectation of even my children or grandchildren living and enjoying that dream.

Excuse me while I . . .

If you found this educational, edifying, interesting or otherwise worth your time, this geezer would appreciate a little supplement to those Social Security checks, They forgot to factor in the cost of publishing a blog.
