Who’s the Enemy?

Don’t ask one of the Democratic candidates. In all likelihood, they will all be pointing at each other. It seems they aren’t familiar with the role they are supposed to play.

Whoever is in the lead in any particular week needs to hope his back is covered with spittle rather than pierced with daggers. These people seem to think that their goal is to beat the others in the Democratic primary. au contraire.

There job is to present their plans and policies to the electorate in the primaries. The voters’ role is to decide who best represents them and also factor in the chances of those they find acceptable of beating Trump.

Trump will spend plenty of time, money and lies in his efforts to smear, slander and sully whoever emerges from the Democratic primaries. The Democrats have no need of a circular firing squad.

I do think the voters should consider what has gone before. Kamala Harris received a substantial boost from the first debate. Many thought that was the bandwagon to jump on. That senator is now gone. Why? It seems that her history as a prosecutor was less attractive and considerably at odds with the persona she crafted for her presidential run. A cursory glance at former prosecutor Amy Klobuchar’s record looks somewhat familiar.

In a similar vein, Biden can’t, or shouldn’t, be able to avoid the several positions he embraced as a senator.

Healthcare is, or should be, a prominent issue in these primaries. Also, someone should pretend they understand what the nature of those discussions should recognize. For the most part, they either come down for or against “Medicare for All.” It is not that simple.

Many people are happy with the health insurance they have. Though “Medicare For All,” as envisioned, is far more robust than the present plain old Medicare, there are a few that have a “Cadillac” version of health insurance. Although it makes more sense from the financial perspective to rid ourselves of the health insurance industry in one fell swoop, that is not an acceptable way to go.

Those who like their insurance so much need to consider that it is tied to their employment. They will want “Medicare for All” if and/or when their job heads toward China or becomes automated. There is no guarantee that their policy is engraved in stone. Any real or imagined pre-existing condition would make it impossible to replace the coverage, and certainly not with another premium plan.

Mayor Pete’s position of “Medicare for All Who Want It” is closer to reality than taking away everyone’s insurance. It should satisfy those who want it and not scare off those who don’t.

Surprise! Bernie is not a socialist. Democratic Socialism, as the term is used, here or in Europe, does not match the definition of socialism. Bernie should leave the field, as I commented in an earlier post, not because of being a Democratic Socialist but because one heart attack is too likely to lead to another. To repeat myself, a second heart attack, during the general election, would hand Trump another 4 years on a silver platter.

I just fail to see the evidence of how these people will unite the country, or even just the party, by attacking their compatriots. Now is the time for issues. Beating Trump needs to wait until there is a viable opponent that’s not too battered or moistened to fight the good fight.

If you found this educational, edifying, interesting or otherwise worth your time, this geezer would appreciate a little supplement to those Social Security checks, They forgot to factor in the cost of publishing a blog.

Many thanks,
